February 2015 SMB HA Storage Solutions A
Brief Comparison of HA Storage Solutions – Part 3 Appliances Among
shared storage alternatives, the main HA storage choices for today’s SMBs
include: ·
Mirrored SAN systems ·
Mirrored or clustered NAS systems ·
Virtual storage appliances ·
SAN appliances Determining suitability of a particular type of HA solution
for SMBs is beyond the scope of this newsletter. However, there are a few
generalizations that can be made about each solution category to highlight
the basic pros and cons of each. Virtual Storage
Appliances. To address SMB needs, VMware has extended its
server virtualization management model to virtual storage appliances (VSA).
VSA enables creation of shared storage instances, which eliminates the need
for implementing shared storage hardware. However, to implement high
availability, VSA requires implementation on clustered servers. With
clustered servers, when a host (physical) server goes down, VSA automatically
fails over to another server in the cluster, providing HA behavior and
protecting against single-point failures and data loss. ... Learn more >> |
