Mirrored or Clustered NAS Systems

Among shared storage alternatives, the main HA storage choices for today’s SMBs include:
 

·      Mirrored SAN systems

·      Mirrored or clustered NAS systems

·      Virtual storage appliances

·      SAN appliances

Determining suitability of a particular type of HA solution for SMBs is beyond the scope of this newsletter. However, there are a few generalizations that can be made about each solution category to highlight the basic pros and cons of each.

Mirrored or Clustered Network (IP-based) Appliances.  NAS is widely recognized for its relatively simple IP-based network storage architecture compared to Fibre Channel SAN. Connected to servers via IP connection, NAS storage is shared easily among servers using NFS and CIFS protocol. One of the primary appeals of NAS is that it is a dedicated file server appliance with straightforward compatibility with computers over an IP network.
